Ted Bauman grew up in the United States but moved to South Africa in his early adulthood where he took a part in developing and implementing post-apartheid policies. He traveled all over Asia and Africa in those days to offer consulting services and learned a lot about the connection between economics and politics in a variety of different cultures. He also worked on and published a spread of global journals that include Environment and Urbanization, The Journal of Microfinance, and Small Enterprise Development.
While in South Africa, Ted Bauman also worked to help get financing for low-cost housing projects as a fund manager. He also earned postgraduate degrees in History and Economics at the University of Cape Town during his time in the country and helped out countless nonprofit organizations by serving in executive roles. Ted Bauman served a variety of clients during the 2000s as a consultant who used his research skills to write about finance and housing plan issues. During this time, he worked with the World Bank, grant-making groups in Europe, the United Nations, and the government of South Africa. He also worked with Habitat for Humanity International as its Director of International Housing Programs. After serving with the organization for 5 years, he decided to move on to pursue his passion as a writer and researcher.
